OWHC youth project „Youth on the Trail of World Heritage" 2004/05
In the schoolyear 2004/2005 Stralsund and Wismar participated in the youth project "Youth on the Trail of World Heritage" which was initiated by the Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC). The purpose of this project is to twin schools located in different world heritage cities. Through the three activities that are proposed, the young people will discover the heritage of the twin cities and will become aware of its universal value.
46 cities registered in the school-twinning program. In Stralsund the Hansa-Gymnasium is twinned with a school from Banská Stiavnica in the Slovak Republic. In Wismar the Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium is twinned with a school from Hoi An in Vietnam.
Die OWHC
Founded in 1993, in Fez, Morocco, the Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC) is a non-profit non-governmental organization created to help member cities and their population to improve the management of those sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Its mission is to promote cooperation and the exchange of information and knowledge among the managers of all the world heritage cities.
Besides the OWHC has been intensifying its efforts to raise awareness of the World Heritage concept among young people for several years now. Thus, in year 2000, the organization launched the international drawing contest "City of Culture for Peace". Thus, in 2002, the organization proposed a second project entitled: "Heritage and Youth", whereby a forum bringing together young people from world heritage cities took place at the Symposium of the Organization held in Rhodes, Greece, in 2003. „Youth on the Trail of World Heritage" is therefore, in 2004, the third project of the OWHC intended for young people. More information on the project and the Organization of World Heritage Cities can be found on the official website http://www.ovpm.org/.
Goal 1: To initiate young people to the large concept of cultural heritage
In the beginning, the participants had to choose, document and photograph a "heritage" item originating from their home environment. Each research was to be described on a card on family heritage. The item selected had to be a remembrance of a person or an important moment in the history of their family and had to have a significant value justifying its being passed on from one generation to the next. The results of the project group of the Hansa-Gymnasium Stralsund can be found here:
