Discover a World Heritage...

Nature and city-life are closely linked in Stralsund and Wismar. The distinctive atmosphere of the maritime towns gives its visitors an impression of the seafaring in former times. Here was the place where the merchants and traders moored their cogs. These days the scene of the two city-ports is dominated by cutters and longboats, sailing boats and yachts. Pleasure boats invite you for a trip to the surrounding islands, and the dock area attracts visitors from near and far with its numerous maritime summer events.

You will make a wealth of valuable discoveries in the search for artistic treasures in churches and museums. The artistic inventory of the large brick cathedrals makes an impression in the same way as the impressive organ constructions. Numerous national and international organ concerts and festivals are organised in both cities. The historic library in Stralsund and the cultural historical museums of both cities house a great fund of contemporary evidence from various epochs. Here the history of the Hanseatic cities comes alive and can be experienced at close proximity.

Traditional events like the Schweden- and the Wallenstein-Festival or Stralsund's unique "Long Night of Open Monuments" and the Music Festival of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are highlights among many other outstanding cultural events.

Mouth-watering fish specialities of the region can be relished in the mediaeval ambience of the traditional dockland pubs and gourmets of the international cuisine will be pampered in the cosy city restaurants.

Inside the colourful gabled houses you find plenty shopping facilities. Here you feel the pulse of the city and the unique harmony of tradition and modern age.

The Hanseatic cities of Stralsund and Wismar lie in the picturesque landscape of the North German Baltic Sea region. The sea air is soft, pure and contains iodine. The experience of nature is very close, whether on the endless sandy beaches of the bay of Wismar, the island of Rügen, Hiddensee and Poel or the ‘Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft'. Cranes and grey herons have their resting places here on their journey to their summer and winter quarters.

Discover two towns situated directly by the sea, which preserve their history and welcome the future. We look forward to welcoming you soon to our towns of Stralsund and Wismar!
