Kirchgang in the Heilgeistkloster Stralsund
German World Heritage Foundation
An initiative of the Hanseatic towns of Stralsund and Wismar
During the preparation of their own nomination both towns have learned much about the idea of the World Heritage Convention of 1972. The basic concept of the convention is the shared responsibility of all people for the cultural and natural heritage of the world. The World Heritage Foundation wants to actively support this concept of global responsibility.
At the end of 2000 the Hanseatic towns of Stralsund and Wismar decided to establish the World Heritage Foundation. This was just before forwarding their own World Heritage application. The decision to form a foundation was based on the fact that contrary to a one-time project contribution, the capital investment in a foundation is preserved and the interest can be used to finance new projects every year.
It is the aim of the Foundation to contribute to the balance of the World Heritage list and to assist endangered World Heritage sites. In particular, countries with limited financial resources will benefit from the Foundation in their efforts to protect and preserve their cultural and natural heritage for future generations.
How can you support the World Heritage Foundation?
- With project contributions that benefit ongoing projects (from 1 Euro)
- With contributions to the capital of the foundation. The higher the capital of the foundation, the higher are the resulting proceeds that can be used to finance future projects (from 500 Euro)
- For German partners: by taking over a sponsorship for one of our projects
